The term ‘Holistic’ is derived from the word "wholestic", in medical vocabulary it connotes the system of treatment meant for the well being of the human entity in it’s entirety, comprising of body, mind & soul. It is not merely a treatment to cure diseases. It has more a preventive role to play in as much as it keeps the diseases away from us by keeping our body, mind & soul in a highly, healthy condition.  

Modern medicines can only fight diseases & ailments. We turn to such medicines, when we are struck by different kinds of illness. But do we ever think of maintaining a healthy physic both in body & mind, to keep such ailments at bay? Most assuredly not. Our busy schedule of day to day life never allows us to think in these lines This is a dangerous trend which can cost our own lives at a premature stage.

Holistic includes a set of treatments like Acupuncture, Aromatherapy, Ayurveda, Chelation, Yoga, Mediation (Stress Management), Music therapy, Reiki, Diet therapy, etc. The treatments available here are Ayurveda, Chelation Therapy, Yoga, Stress Management, Diet therapies about which each therapy is elaborated. These are taken as a package for a set of days. One feels his/her body, mind and soul cleaned and refreshed after taking a course of Holistic treatments. His/ Her body, mind and soul becomes more healthy and resistive to all diseases. Let us prevent diseases rather than treating ourselves after being struck by diseases.

Ayurveda is a sanskrit term composed from ayur (life) and veda (knowledge). Ayurveda is the traditional oldest healing treatment, evolved through many centuries by meditation and treatment.


Ayurvedic treatments can be classified into eight categories.

  • Shalakya (ENT and Ophthalmology)
  • Graha (Psychotherapy)
  • Damshitra (Toxicology)

The resort provides various treatments. Rejuvenation helps to keep the human body in complete health and tones all muscles. Following are the treatments available at the Cherian Ashram.


A five fold purification therapy for about 2 hours a day. Provides and increased and healthy life span by removing all impurities from the body. The gains more resistance and longevity.


The prescribed herbal oil and buttermilk is continuously poured on the forehead for an hour or more. Recommended for stress relief, insomnia, headaches, sinusitis, etc

Njavara Kizhi

This treatment has proved excellent results in hemiplegia, hypertension, rheumatic diseases,  joint pains, numbness, obesity, skin disorders, etc. After oil massage, njavara kizhi made of njavara rice, milk and medicated herbs are applied lukewarm on whole body with cloth bags dipped in medicated solution.


Good for rheumatic complaints, joint pains, nervous disorders, sexual weakness, etc. Herbal lukewarm oil is poured on body continuously for 50 to 80 minutes and massaged in a rhythmic way.


Helps to reduce stress, strain and fatigue. Improves physical appearance and nourishes the body. This treatment includes body massage with herbal oil or herbal powder and also facial massage. Herbal rich steam bath helps to improve viatality.

Marma Chikilsa

Marma chikilsa is used to treat the injuries caused on the vital regions of the human body. The Marma Chikilsa can be done by only a person with thorough knowledge of all the vital spots of the human body.

The process of Agnihotra consists of making two offerings to the fire exactly at the time of sunrise & sunset alongwith the chanting of two small Sanskrit mantras.


The offerings consist of two pinchfuls of uncooked rice grains smeared with a few drops of cow's pure ghee. The fire is prepared out of dried cowdung cakes in a small copper pot of a semi-pyramid shape.

The positive effects of Agnihotra are an outcome of simultaneous functioning of many subtle scientific principles such as, effect of chanting of specific sounds on the atmosphere and mind, energies emanating from the pyramid- shape, nutritional effect of burning of medicinal ingredients and the effects of bio-rhythms etc .

The Sanskrit term “YOGA” is derived from the word ‘YUG’ which means ‘to join or yoke’ – the individual soul (Jeevatma) with the universal soul (Paramatma). Primarily a spiritual discipline based on yoga darshana- or the yoga philosophy of Patanjili – One of the six orthodox Indian philosophies. It includes physical exercises, breathing techniques and meditation.


To introduce oneself to the basic concepts and practice of yoga including the age-old secrets of health which will enable the participants to develop a healthy body and healthy mind. This will enable the participants to face the stress and strain of daily life, develop a positive outlook in life- healthy relations with other members of family and society- develop and maintain better efficiency in one’s work and to develop the dynamic personality.

World Health Organization (WHO) definition of health states that health is not merely the absence of illness or infirmity, but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. Yoga is far from being just a system of physical exercise. It has a psychological, physical and spiritual dimension.

Diet Therapy

Diet Therapy is the Natural Cure for all Diseases and is lead by John Baby, Ph. D, Dept. of Psychology, University of Calicut, Kerala, India.

Eating raw food (that is fruits, nuts, grains, grams and vegetables in the un-boiled form) and drinking fresh water (un-boiled and untreated with chlorine or alum) and breathing unpolluted fresh air, sun bath, etc. can cure any disease. Cooked food should be completely avoided until the disease is completely cured.

Even cancerous tumors and sores can be cured in a few weeks if this diet is followed. Asthma can  be cured in four-five days, except in patients who are habituated to steroid drugs. Heart ailments also can be cured in few days. Diabetics can be brought to normal sugar level within 7-8 days. Whatever may be your disease its cause would be a faulty nutrition. All the ancient medical concepts existing in various parts of the world agree to this. Nutrition does not confine to food alone. All elements which constitute the body are included in nutrition.

It is a thirty days program to eat as much as you can to reduce their weight, hypertension, blood sugar and stress. Effective classes lead by eminent scholars of this field will be held over these days of course. Evenings are colorful with musical nights and other entertainment programs like moon light walking. Stress Management

Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings. As a positive influence, stress can help compel us to action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In so adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it.

As we have seen, positive stress adds anticipation and excitement to life, and we all thrive under a certain amount of stress. Deadlines, competitions, confrontations, and even our frustrations and sorrows add depth and enrichment to our lives. Our goal is not to eliminate stress but to learn how to manage it and how to use it to help us. Insufficient stress acts as a depressant and may leave us feeling bored or dejected; on the other hand, excessive stress may leave us feeling "tied up in knots." What we need to do is find the optimal level of stress which will individually motivate but not overwhelm each of us.
